Case Study: Designing and Delivering a Large Scale Trading Desk Installation
About the Client
Our client is one of the world’s largest energy and commodities traders. They are active across global energy trading, logistics and infrastructure. When the company expanded its London office they chose Technology Desking to furnish it. We designed, manufactured, and installed several hundred new desks for them.
Challenges:
This was a large project, with many desks to install. It required careful planning and coordination.
The installation had to work within the constraints of an occupied, high-profile London office. It needed to be scheduled carefully to avoid disrupting daily operations.
The office was in a busy central London location, so the installation required coordination around access, deliveries and building management.
Traders work long hours, often monitoring several data streams at once. The desks need to be ergonomic to support comfortable working and focus. They also had to be durable to support long hours of use. It was important to avoid unnecessary clutter on the desktop, as that would be a distraction.
Traders use a lot of tech and multiple monitors. Integrated cable management and power units were essential to keep everything running smoothly.
The client needed desks for workers with a variety of roles and needs, from admin staff to full traders.
Solutions
With the office fully occupied during the week, the installation was delivered through a carefully phased programme carried out over 30 days. This approach allowed us to install a large number of desks while avoiding disruption to day-to-day trading activity.
Our project management team carefully coordinated access, deliveries and building management, allowing the fitters to complete the installation efficiently. They carried out detailed logistics planning to manage the fit-out in a busy central London location.
Working to a strict deadline, the team coordinated the removal and clearance of existing furniture, recycled steel and aluminium components, and ensured the trading floor was fully prepared for the next stage of the project.
We designed height adjustable desks for the client, so traders could choose to stand for part of the working day. This supports ergonomics and helps maintain alertness in a high-pressure trading environment. Our desks incorporated below desk cable trays to help keep them free of distracting clutter. The desktops had scratch resistant laminate surfaces for durability.
Trading desks usually have multiple monitors and other equipment. The desks we supplied to the client incorporated plenty of cable management features. They also had sliding desktops giving access to an upper cable tray. Cable chains discreetly route the cables into the PCs below the desktop.
We installed bespoke Technology Links desktop units, customised to the client’s specific power and data requirements. Each unit has multiple power sockets, USB ports, LAN connections and microphone sockets. This enables them to support a variety of devices.
We installed our DT21 desks. These feature scalable frames that allow the client to adapt the desks to their changing needs. They can be adjusted from an admin to a trader desk and back again if required. This flexibility means the client won’t have to buy new furniture as the business evolves.
The Result
This was a large-scale project that Technology Desking delivered successfully. With several hundred desks to install into an occupied office, the project presented key challenges. We had to plan the installation carefully to avoid disrupting day-to-day trading activity. Close coordination with the client and wider project team ensured the trading floor furniture was installed efficiently, with minimal disruption to staff.
